Depending on the Bible translation, James 4:14 describes our lives as but a “vapor” or a “mist” across the eternity of time. In just a few short words, it captures the themes of brevity in life, mystery in the present, uncertainty about the future, and encouragement to live each day with gratitude. I’m grateful for the life of my father, which began in May of 1937 and ended in December of 2025. Dad worked as an English professor and social worker, with a heart to leave the world better than he found it. I believe that Dad’s life’s work advanced that cause. I’m thankful that, in the busyness of my work life, I made it a priority to spend time with Dad, especially in his later years. Our work lives are but a part of our whole lives, and the loss of loved ones is always a precious reminder to put relationships first – relationships with each other, and with our Creator.
