Leviticus 9:23-24 (NIV):
“Moses and Aaron then went into the tent of meeting. When they came out, they blessed the people; and the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people. Fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted for joy and fell facedown.”
Leviticus 10:1-2 (NIV):
“Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, contrary to his command. So fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord.”
These two biblical events provide a clear contrast on how we use what God has given us. One instance shows God providing the fire, symbolizing His acceptance and blessing. The other portrays human effort without divine direction, leading to judgment. Reflecting on these events leads me to consider how I am using what God entrusts to me each day.
- God Initiates, We Follow
God provided the fire Himself to consume the offering in acceptance. I see in this that God gives us the resources, opportunities, and abilities we need to fulfill His purposes. My role is to steward these resources faithfully, aligning my efforts with His leading.
Reflection: Am I faithfully stewarding what God has provided to fulfill His purposes, or am I striving in my own strength?
- Following God’s Path, Not Ours
Nadab and Abihu decided to act on their own initiative rather than follow God’s clear instructions. Their story reminds me that true effectiveness comes when I follow God’s path, not my own. It’s easy in today’s professional world to rely on personal ambition or human wisdom, but lasting impact occurs only when aligned with God’s guidance.
Reflection: Am I regularly checking my actions and decisions against God’s guidance, particularly in professional and personal goals?
- Humility in Stewardship
Both instances involved servants of God given significant responsibility. The outcome differed dramatically because of their heart attitudes. True stewardship involves humility and willingness to follow God’s ways, acknowledging that increase and blessing come from Him alone.
Reflection: How can I cultivate humility and dependence on God as I manage my responsibilities and influence?
- Trusting God for the Increase
The acceptable sacrifice clearly demonstrated that God Himself provides the results when we obediently follow His ways. We are called to plant and water, but only God provides the increase (1 Corinthians 3:7). My responsibility is faithfulness, not controlling outcomes.
Reflection: Am I focusing more on faithfulness or on outcomes that only God can control?
- Privilege and Influence
Aaron’s sons held positions of great privilege and influence. Their roles gave them potential to significantly impact others positively, yet their misuse of privilege led to severe consequences. Each of us also holds more influence than we might realize—in our families, workplaces, and communities. God desires that we use our positions responsibly and intentionally for His good purposes.
Reflection: Am I consciously using the influence and privileges God has entrusted to me to positively impact others and invest in the future?
I feel like I am daily learning that lasting impact comes through faithfully using what God provides, following the path He lays out, and trusting Him to bring about the increase.
