My good friend Jonathan Nowlen is doing some wonderful work restoring the dignity and mission of vocation. In his latest video, Jonathan captures what I think of as “just the basics” for everyday working Christians to become faith active at work. First, he highlights our original commission to cultivate the world, from the Cultural Mandate in Genesis 2:15. The Cultural Mandate reminds us that creation is what God made out of nothing; and culture is what we should make out of God’s creation through our everyday work. Second, Jonathan highlights the importance of spiritually reaching our full sphere of influence at work. Most of us have more relationships through work than anywhere else in our lives, and therefore work represents a vital mission field. Third, Jonathan reframes the “broken edges” all around us at work as the redemptive opportunities through which our work can advance God’s Kingdom can bring a taste of heaven to work. I pray in 2026 for an accelerating global movement of working Christians pursuing “Just the Basics” as spiritual ambassadors through work (2 Corinthians 5:18-20).
