All of us, given enough tenure at work, find ourselves in the grips of controlling constraints – chief constraints – that bring progress to a standstill. These constraints take many forms – difficult people, inadequate funding, competitive pressures, economic volatility, to name just a few. On a spiritual level, these constraints are sometimes “strongholds” that leave us feeling hopeless for a solution, but completely stuck without one. Here are a few Biblically grounded avenues that have proven helpful for me when tackling “chief constraints” that impede advancement: (1) Exploration – I spend time to fully study the constraint, so I can see its “root cause” and best solutions, like Joseph project managing a famine in Egypt; (2) Imagination – I enlist others to brainstorm with me on creative approaches outside “standard operating procedure”, like David killing Goliath with a stone rather than a sword; and 3) Multiplication – I delegate responsibility for solutions to others so that “many hands make light work”, like Moses did after heeding the counsel of his father-in-law Jethro. I pray that the counsel of the Holy Spirit will spark your path to progress wherever you find strongholds of constraint at work.
