Rivers and Lakes

We often talk of the Body of Christ, and understandably focus on the metaphor of a human body. I would love to encourage you today to think of the Body as a different kind of body – a body of water. There are two very different types of bodies of water – ones that flow and ones that do not. Lakes are still, self-contained, and shaped by their surroundings. Rivers move. They shape the land around them. They flow in a direction. They connect places, bring life, and make impact.

Too often, we as the Body operate like lakes—localized, fixed, and disconnected from the movement of the broader Kingdom. But Scripture paints a different picture. From the river in Eden to the river flowing from the throne of God in Revelation, we are invited into a story of movement, unity, and transformation.

This picture is especially relevant for those in the marketplace. Business leaders aren’t stationary—they’re mobile. They operate across networks. They intersect with people from every walk of life. They are perfectly positioned to function like rivers in the Kingdom—bridging gaps, resourcing others, and shaping culture.

When we acknowledge that opportunity, we recognize that we are called to connect sectors, inspire change, and carry the life of the Spirit into every sphere, we become what we were always meant to be—a Body in motion.

Let’s not be content to sit still and reflect what’s around us. Let’s be rivers—carrying Kingdom values into our work, our relationships, and our city. Let’s flow together in a unified direction, shaping the land, bringing life, and moving forward with purpose.

Because the Kingdom was never meant to be still. It was meant to move.
