Gallup’s groundbreaking World Poll has uncovered that across the globe, the desire for a good job now outranks even love, money, food, shelter, safety, peace and freedom! This insight led Gallup CEO Jim Clifton to publish The Coming Jobs War, emphasizing the priority of creating and sustaining good jobs in society. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics finds that full-time workers spend more than half their waking hours at work, which highlights the significant positioning of work for spiritual impact. Not only that, working Christians are strategically deployed across key channels of cultural influence through work, in the private, public and social sectors. Yet despite all of this opportunity, only about 1 out of every 4 working Christians even aspires to a faith life at work, and only about 1 out of every 20 working Christians consistently integrates faith and work. Today’s working Christians miss the connection between faith and work altogether; miss the purpose that comes from understanding spiritual significance through work; and miss the mark in pursuing work for vocational and cultural flourishing. I call that a big miss!
