The Prism Light Spectrum – Angstroms to Diversity

Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. – Gen 1:3-4

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image. So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. – Gen 1:26a-27.

OK, some of “these” I can see, and some I can’t.    It is not a mystery. It is majesty!

And what might “those” be? When God said He created “light”, He created a tremendously diverse variance of light wavelengths in our universe. A wavelength is like an ocean wave. We see the crest and valley of waves at our beaches in a nice repetition. These come at a “frequency”, meaning there are so many that come in on a regular pattern (like about 6 to 7 per minute in a light breeze to 4 to 5 per minute in a hefty wind). And the distance between the peaks is called the “wavelength”. It could be a few feet to many feet, depending on if it’s calm or in a hurricane. I can “see” these “physical” water waves.

Just like the small diversity in ocean wave and their wavelengths, there are some waves we can’t “see”. Like X-rays, gamma rays or radio broadcast waves. These are very short compared to ocean waves. And these waves have short and extremely short wavelengths. Without getting into too much detail, the length of an average TV broadcast wave is on the longer scale, but still small, like 6” to 9”. Radar waves are smaller yet, at about ½”. Things keep getting smallerin the spectrum God created. The visible things we see in color go from infrared to ultraviolet and these wavelengths are very small, where over 2.1 million “waves” of visible red can fit, or 3.1 million visible blue “waves” can fit.

That is a lot of different waves and all the visible colors in the narrow light band are somewhere between those two boundaries. But why is that important? God created tremendous color variations and the eyes in all living things to be able to observe all those colors at the same time! Cockroaches have incredibly complex eyes. Humans do, as well; but difference composition. He also created mankind with incredible variations!

Melanin determines the color of skin, hair, and eyes. The complex determination of what color those traits are comes from the human DNA. God determines what a person will be like from the father and the mother. The resulting person is thus made by the Highest authority, out of the finest materials for a specific purpose in this world. The skin color, the eye color, and the hair color are all appreciated by the eyes of the beholder!

Everything God made matches up! He made the color spectrum to propel the wonderful diversity of His creation into our view. And then He made people to dovetail into that spectrum, so He could show the cohesive nature of all peoples everywhere. There are no half-people, half something else. We are all 100% people. We did not evolve from another species; there’s too much proof of us being created as people.

So, the embrace of all humanity in love, respect, appreciation, honor, and curiosity is part of our worship of God! What a wonderful thing He did to make all of the color and humanity in the first week of creation!

“Lord, thank You for showing us the things we can “see”, and the things we can’t. We can’t “see” the individual melanin in each person, but we see the totality of diversity in each person. What a wonderful and inspirational creation You made! We love You, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
