Wisdom Over Intelligence

Throughout the workplace, AI tools like ChatGPT are now commonplace, and the applications are vast. From designing marketing copy, to developing staff training, to enhancing fundraising strategies, artificial intelligence is here to stay. Unfortunately, some of the deeper considerations about HOW to use AI responsibly are not being well vetted. For example, should police robots be programmed with lethal force? Should entire categories of jobs be eliminated?  Should “relationships” between humans and AI be considered comparable to traditional relationships? Proverbs 3:5-6 speaks to this when it says:

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

We should not lean on our understanding in place of God’s, because only the Lord has perfect perspective on every situation. Similarly, we should not lean on AI’s understanding in place of ours, for intelligence is not the same as wisdom.  While artificial intelligence can offer insight and assistance, it is the Holy Spirit inside of us that offers superior counsel (John 14:15-18).
