U.S. soccer fans joined the rest of the world for the excitement of the 2026 World Cup. Almost 6 billion people started watching the same sports screen from the launch on June 11th, to the conclusion on July 19th where Spain won a hard-fought championship against Argentina. The United States is growing increasingly competitive in the mix. Its team, led by “Captain America” Christian Pulisic, advanced substantially even as misfortune struck.

At only 27 years old, Christian has already reached the highest echelon of sports performance. One might expect him to be haughty, but he is humble instead. During the opening match for the U.S., Christian suffered a season-ending leg injury. He was forced off the very field on which he had dreamed of playing his whole life. Christian’s team moved forward without him, as he sat in the stands watching silently.

It would have been understandable for Christian to be bitter . . . “why now” and “why me”? Instead, he simply declared to the press, “I trust in God”. Christian acknowledged that he didn’t understand the “why”, but he also made it clear that he had faith in the “WHO” – in God. Christian surrendered in the midst of defeat. He reflected spiritual maturity in the midst of workplace adversity.

From the stadiums that are the temples of our age, Christian modeled the best of our faith through the worst of conditions. His spiritual agility matches his physical ability. Christian is an extraordinary Christian we would do well to emulate.
